Pegula *2-5 Navarro
Navarro senses her moment. She delivers a first ace and then keeps the first serves coming as she races out to 40-0.
Pegula is still thinking about that previous game, clearly.
But then the first serve drops and Pegula refocuses, and it starts forcing some errors from Navarro.
Ut oh. Now Navarro double faults for deuce and Pegula then gets a couple of chances to break back — the second as Pegula comes to the net and eventually finds the winning forehand volley and the line.
But she appears to call herself “stupid” as her chopped return falls out.
Navarro isn’t helping herself either. Her third double fault of the match hands Pegula a third break opportunity — one taken away by a wonderful backhand drive down the line.
Five times at deuce now, the 15th point of this game finally gives Navarro a chance to hold. Pegula’s backhand slice is into the net off one of the longer rallies and Navarro is a game away from the first set.
